Crying Fowl

Today got off to a really bad start. I woke up late, in a bad mood. And while I was getting dressed I looked out the window and saw four hens wandering past.

When we got outside and down to the chicken wagon, there were no live chickens in sight... just two dead roosters.

Best guess of what happened is that a dog or dogs attacked early this morning. The one rooster was still warm when we found them, and the rooster that spends his days with the hens and his nights with the other roosters in the bachelor coop was nowhere to be found. So it must have happened this morning. None of the chickens were missing any parts, they were just dead with feathers strewn everywhere, which is consistent with dogs shaking them to death.

We were able to round up 16 live hens, although one is injured pretty badly, and we found four dead hens, two dead roosters, and one dead chicken that belonged to our neighbors. Tonight I found one more live hen wandering around the ram pen, but I wasn't able to catch her. This leaves one beautiful orange rooster and four hens MIA. Maybe they have PTSD and are hiding. I hope so.

We left the coop open last night, so this is our fault. Just one of those days that are better when they are over.

  1. What a bummer! You're right, some days are just better when they are over! Hope today was better.
