Once in a lifetime

Last week I saw something I've never seen before. I was headed out the door near dusk when I saw a doe walking up the hill behind the house. The sun glinted off her ears and silhouetted her body against the skyline, and I knew I had to grab the camera and try to capture that moment.

Just as I stepped outside onto the deck, she paused. Oh, I thought, what a neat shot; couldn't do that again if I tried. But then...

A little fawn burst from the fence line and started nursing.

And then another fawn ran up and started nursing on the other side. It's a little hard to see in the picture, but I saw it firsthand, trust me, there are two!

She tucked her head down and licked them just like the ewes do with their lambs.

After a while the fawns finished nursing and the trio jumped the fence and disappeared into the twilight.
